Welcoming speech

Anna Rosenwasser, President of the Lesbian Organisation Switzerland

«But you already have everything», they say, «there are homosexuals in a couple of series and recently there was Wonder Woman.» We think that's good. Homos and Wonder Woman. But that we now have everything, that everything is achieved in the world of movies, that's nonsense. On the one hand, because of course everything is never achieved, filmmakers could pack their bags. After all, storytelling is also about creating something new. On the other hand - and this is important - this story also shows us what we can wish for. If Wonder Woman is an exception, what can we wish for? If homos are something special, what does it say about what wishes we are allowed to have? No, of course we don't have everything, by far not. But we have a lot because we do it ourselves: protagonists who don't have to be called «strong women» because being strong and being female speak for themselves; narratives that are beyond the norm; plots that give us a feeling of being at home because they're not just cheesy and predictable, but break down boundaries where there shouldn't be any. Films can and must do all this: from the pleasant feeling to the big WTF, while you walk out of the movie theatre irritated. We need both and everything in between - and not just at home with a lonely view onto the screen, but in a kind of collective that can be created through a festival like the Luststreifen. Where wishes can arise, in moving and touching images. Yes, we already have a lot; but we want everything.

Editorial

Dear friends
We never lost our spirits and anticipation: We brainstormed until only Prosecco helped (and it did), bummed tickets for world premieres at big festivals for you, and finally, together with all our strength, landed the last vital sponsorship. Now the Luststreifen Film Festival Basel is on its twelfth year. We present 13 feature-length films and 21 shorts. From hundreds of films shown at the festivals in Berlin, Vienna, Nyon and Locarno and 2462 submitted, with special attention to diversity, we have selected the best fictional, documentary and pornographic films for you. Many of them will be shown in Switzerland for the very first time. In addition to national premieres, the main theme of this year's film programme is utopia: what could a world beyond norms and constraints look like? Numerous films in the programme provide their own cinematic answers to this question. See for yourself.
Beyond the films, this year we offer you a broad side programme: art, discussions, concerts and workshops. We are exhausted, but above all happy and full of anticipation for every single part of the programme.
